MICROBIOME SAFE:
A MULTIFACTORIAL APPROACH

When we speak of microbiome safety, it means taking the skin microbiome into account and using ingredients that are gentle on the microbiome. The skin microbiome has special properties to support and improve our health.

EVERY INGREDIENT
MATTERS

The process begins with thorough ingredient selection and the creation of a database containing their evaluations. During the initial screening, the effect of each substance on the epidermis is assessed. We go one step further — we also analyze how ingredients affect the skin’s external protective layer, the microbiome.

Based on our rigorous criteria, we document in our database the impact of every ingredient on the bacteria living on the skin’s surface. We have also noticed that the ingredients most friendly to the microbiome are also the gentlest on the skin.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE RIGHT PRESERVATIVES

Preservatives are used to prevent excessive growth of bacterial colonies in a product, ensuring long-lasting freshness. Most often, this is achieved by adding large amounts of preservatives, which makes storage easier. Unfortunately, we often forget about the significant impact these substances can have on the skin’s microbiome. Because microbiome safety is our priority, we take every possible step to change this.

Our main goal is to prevent unwanted bacteria from entering the product. This can happen in two ways:

During the production process, before the product reaches the user. To prevent contamination, each stage of production is strictly controlled and conducted under the highest hygiene standards.

After opening the packaging, through contact with the environment. In this context, the choice of packaging is crucial — tightly sealed or vacuum (airless) packaging minimizes the risk of contamination. Airless packaging is a pump system that prevents external air from entering the product.

The next step is determining the minimal concentration of preservative needed to ensure product safety. This concentration varies depending on the specific formulation, so we carry out detailed tests each time to optimize it. In some cases, thanks to a lower-pH formula, preservatives are not needed at all. The main purpose of maintaining a low pH is not only to preserve the skin’s pH balance but also to support a healthy microbiome. An additional benefit is that lower pH creates unfavorable conditions for microorganisms, extending the product’s shelf life without requiring preservatives.

Finally, the key element is choosing the right preservation system — thanks to our patented method, we use preservatives that remain active only inside the product and become deactivated upon contact with the skin. This way, the formula inside the packaging is protected without negatively affecting the skin’s microbiome.

EVALUATION OF THE FINAL FORMULATION

Just as we pre-screen our ingredients, we also extensively check whether the final formulation meets our strict criteria. We bring the formulations into contact with micro-organisms, under conditions that correspond to use in practice, and check how it affects the growth of micro-organisms. In addition, we specifically test each product for compatibility with our lactobacilli, so that even our products without probiotics can be perfectly combined with all our other products. In this way, we can certainly guarantee the effectiveness of the lactobacilli!

We deliberately choose to take microbiome safety into account at all levels, because adding one ingredient is clearly not enough to ensure microbiome safety. If the rest of the formulation does not allow the microbiome to remain intact, the added ingredient will have no impact.
